Cats, like humans, can also suffer from diabetes and sometimes they catch a disease commonly known as diabetes mellitus in cats which if not managed properly can lead to serious health problems for them. It is primarily caused by a lack of insulin production or an inadequate response to insulin. Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that helps regulate glucose (sugar) levels in the blood.

The disease is more usually found in middle age to senior cats and more common in males than females. Although less than 1% of the total cat population will suffer from this disease in recent years an upward trend has been noted
